Albi Captivates Europe: Forbes Ranks It Among the Top 5 European Cities to Visit in 2026
Albi, the striking brick city of south-west France, has been ranked 5th in Forbes' “Top 10 European Cities Richest in Culture to Visit in 2026”.
The ranking, based on a report by European Best Destinations and spotlighted by the American business magazine, recognises cities that offer exceptional heritage, cultural depth and a truly distinctive travel experience.
For Albi, this marks a significant international endorsement.
Set along the River Tarn, the city is best known for its UNESCO-listed Episcopal City, inscribed in 2010. Unlike many historic centres, Albi's medieval heart remains vibrantly lived in, creating a rare blend of architectural harmony and everyday authenticity.
Dominating the skyline is Sainte-Cécile Cathedral — the largest brick-built religious monument in the world. With 18,000 square metres of interior paintings, it is also the largest painted cathedral in Europe. Visitors discover one of France's ten fully preserved Gothic rood screens and a monumental organ within its fortress-like walls.
Just steps away, the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, housed in the former Bishops' Palace (Palais de la Berbie), contains the world's largest public collection of works by the Albi-born artist. It offers an intimate encounter with one of the great masters of Post-Impressionism.
Already admired for its cultural vibrancy, picturesque streets and warm southern hospitality, Albi now ranks ahead of historic heavyweights such as Florence and Toledo in this 2026 selection.
For international travellers seeking depth, character and a fresh perspective on Europe, Albi has firmly secured its place on the map.
