Numerous huge projects, some years in the making, are set to be complete this year which will change the landscape and skyline of the city.
COSM is opening its first 70,000 sq. ft. immersive sports and entertainment venue in Michigan. It's under construction at Cadillac Square in downtown Detroit. No specific opening date has been given yet, but it's expected to open sometime in the second half of the year.
Greektown is underdoing a $20 million transformation with its Monroe Streetscape project. The goal is to make the area a safer, more walkable and engaging public space.Plans include upgraded sidewalks and granite pavers, enhanced lighting, public Wi-Fi, integrated sound infrastructure and landscaping. Restaurants and businesses are open during construction which is expected to be completed this fall.
Detroit FC is getting a new 15,000 seat soccer stadium. The professional soccer organization acquired the site of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital at the corner of Michigan Ave. and 20th St. The goal is to have the stadium open in time for the team's 2027 season.
The Motown Museum is undergoing the final phase of a $70 million expansion.The 40,000 sq. ft. project will feature interactive exhibits, the Ford Motor Company Theater, a state-of-the-art recording studio, an expanded retail experience, and community gathering spaces. The Museum is closed until next spring when the expansion project is expected to be completed.
The abandoned Packard Plant will see new life in the form of housing, an electronic music museum, and an indoor skate park.The development is estimated to cost more than $50 million to construct and is projected to be completed by 2029.
NoMad is building a 180-guest room hotel at Michigan Central Station. Expected to open in 2027, NoMad Detroit will anchor the west side of The Station and the top five floors of the building's tower.
The University of Michigan is building a $250 million Center for Innovation in Detroit. The six-story building is expected to open in spring 2027.
The first two floors will house public programs, a cafe and shared office space for the U-M Detroit Center, Admissions Office, School of Environment and Sustainability Clinic. Levels three through six are planned for multidisciplinary graduate research.
A JW Marriott luxury hotel is under construction on Detroit's waterfront. Opening in 2027, the 25-story hotel will connect via a skybridge to the Huntington Place convention center.The hotel will have 601 guestrooms and four dining options, including Andiamo Italian Chophouse.
The University of Michigan reached an agreement to lease a residential tower on Cass Ave. which is currently being developed for $186 million by Related Companies and Olympia Development. Plans are for 313 units for students and faculty inside the 13-story building. Construction is expected to be finished by the fall of 2028.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge will finally open this year. Construction on the bridge from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario began back in 2018 and was first expected to be completed in late 2024, then late last year. The exact opening date has not yet been announced and will depend on their ongoing quality reviews, as well as testing and commissioning.
The bridge deck spanning the distance between the two towers measures just over a half mile (0.53 miles/853 meters,) making it the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America and the tenth longest in the world.
Lastly, the Hudson Tower construction continues which will house residential units and the EDITION Hotel. The 685-foot tower is expected to open sometime in 2027.
