Developed in partnership with Renault Portugal and the Municipality of Fundão, the Historical Villages of Portugal - Tourism Development Association (AHP-ADT) offers a pioneering free sustainable mobility service, which provides tourists, residents and professionals with a fleet of five electric Renault vehicles, from the Historic Village of Castelo Novo, or from the railway stations of Castelo Novo, Alpedrinha and Fundão. It is the "Inclusive and Sustainable Urban Mobility" project, which is now among the three best in the world, in the "Better World for Sustainability, Conservation and Cultural Preservation" category of the prestigious BGTW International Tourism Awards 2024.

The project aims to promote greener and more accessible mobility, integrating electric transport solutions in the Historical Villages of Portugal, to foster more sustainable tourism and reduce the ecological footprint of inhabitants, visitors and companies.

This recognition from the BGTW International Tourism Awards highlights the relevance of the Historical Villages of Portugal project as an example of good practices in sustainability and inclusion, aligning with global trends in environmental protection and development of local communities. The Historical Villages of Portugal are pioneers in combining cultural heritage, tourism and electric mobility technology to offer a unique experience that benefits both visitors and local populations.

The BGTW International Tourism Awards are promoted by the British Travel Writers Association, in partnership with the Cayman Islands tourism department.

About Historical Villages of Portugal

Between hills and valleys of the verdant landscape of the interior of Portugal, full of legends and castles, flavours and traditions, there are 12 simple villages where you feel like getting lost. Almeida, Belmonte, Castelo Mendo, Castelo Novo, Castelo Rodrigo, Idanha-a-Velha, Linhares da Beira, Marialva, Monsanto, Piódão, Sortelha and Trancoso: the Historical Villages of Portugal, a destination that are 12, appear as hidden paradises that take us on a journey to the time of kings and queens, of epic and infinite battles that wrote History as we know it today. They are also the guarantee of unforgettable moments of leisure, adventure and discovery, seasoned with the unparalleled aromas and flavours of the region, which make up its typical gastronomy.

In the territory of the Historical Villages of Portugal there is an endless number of hiking trails and cycling and mountain biking routes – such as the Great Route 22, the longest Walking & Cycling route in Europe and Portugal, with about 600 km. Great Route 22 has the Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe seal, awarded by the European Ramblers Association.

The Historical Villages of Portugal are the first networked destination – on a global scale – and the first national destination to receive the BIOSPHERE DESTINATION certification. And, in 2020, they were the first destination at national level to create the "Responsible Tourist Manifesto", reminding their visitors of the importance of respect for nature.
